Barge Boards

What is barge board?

Barge board is the term used to describe a board fixed to the apex of a roof. It typically runs from the roof ridge to the eaves or cornice.
It is similer to a fascia board which is fixed to the horizontal part of the roofline and is in most cases made from timber or plastic.

Repairing a rotten board

Because the boards are fixed at an angle any rainwater tends to travel down the board to the lowest part causing rot damage or if the board is not sealed to the underside of the roof overhang then water may enter at this point.
The rot can simply be cut away and replaced with new timber before being treated with a knot solution and the appropriate paint finish applied.

New Upvc boards to roof

Upvc replacement boards

Old boards can be fully removed and replaced with a new Upvc one - this is the choice many homeowners have made as it means virtually no maintenance.
There is a wide choice of colours and finishes inc woodgrain to match in with any existing window frames or general color themes for the property.

Vent discs

Barge boards do not require ventilation

Unlike boards at the lower section of the roof with barge boards there is no need to provide roof ventilation.
Ventilation should be placed at the eaves level not on a gable/apex.
Hot air rises so to avoid increases in hearing bills its best to avoid placing air vents near the top of the roof - unless you have exceptional roof insulation.

Decorative mouldings

Barge boards can be pre fabricated to a desired profile as shown in the image.
Upvc manufacturers have created a 'clip on' plastic barge board decorative moulding which can only be used with their upvc boards.
